1. General Instructions
To configure your iPhone or iPod Touch manually to connect to Nexus e-mail, please follow the guidelines below.
Please note: Pre G3 iPhone/iPod Touch devices can only be configured to connect to one Exchange account at any one time. So if you already have an Exchange account configured then you will not be able to add your Nexus account until/unless you remove the existing Exchange account. However, phones and devices using the iOS4 operating system can connect to multiple Exchange accounts. This applies to iPhone 3G and later phones and devices.
You will need to know your Oxford username (typically four letters and four numbers, e.g. oucs0037) and password before starting. Please make sure that WiFi is enabled.
- From the Springboard (home screen), go to the
Settingsapplication and select
[Mail, Contacts, Calendars].
- You will see a list of types of email accounts; select
- Enter your account information:
- Enter your Oxford email address (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org)
- Leave this field blank
- Enter your Oxford username, e.g. oucs0037
- Enter your Nexus password
- This will default to the email address you entered above, but can be renamed to anything you like (e.g. 'Oxford email' or 'Nexus').
- You will see a message saying 'Verifying Exchange account information' (this may take longer than you expect). You will then be asked to enter more information. In the
Serverfield, enter 'nexus.ox.ac.uk'. (The
Domainfield should still be left blank.) Press
- You should see a message saying "Exchange account verified".
- You will then be asked which data you want to synchronise:
If you choose to synchronise your contacts, you will be asked whether you want to keep all the existing contacts on your iPhone (recommended!) or delete them.
You will be offered this choice for both contacts and calendars.
- When you have selected the synchronisation options, click the
Donebutton. You will see a message saying "Configuring sync for Exchange...". When this is done, you will be returned to the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' settings page, and you should see your Nexus account added to the list.
2. Mail synchronisation options
- By default, only the last 3 days of email will be synced to your iPhone. To change this setting, select the account from the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' settings page, and select your preferred option from 'Mail Days to Sync'.
- You will also see an option 'Mail Folders to Push'. In order to 'subscribe' to folders (i.e. download the emails in them to your phone, and check them for new email) you will need to select them here.
- When you have selected the folders you want, on returning to the Account settings page you will see that 'Mail Folders to Push' now says 'Inbox + n' where n is the number of folders you have selected to subscribe to.
- Fetch versus Push: you can choose between 'fetching' new email from the server at regular intervals, or allowing the server to 'push' new email to your iPhone. If you opt for 'push' you will get new email as soon as it arrives (assuming you have a network connection), but be aware that this may run your battery down faster! If you opt for 'fetch', you can choose how often the device checks for new mail. You can change your Push/Fetch settings at any time by going to the
Settingsapplication and selecting
[Fetch New Data]to configure.
3. Calendar options
- If you have chosen to sync your Nexus calendar to your iPhone, only a month of past items from your calendar will be downloaded to your iPhone by default. To download more past items, go to the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' settings screen; scroll down to the end, and under 'Calendars' you will see the option 'Sync'. Follow this to choose how many events you wish to sync.
- By default you will receive alerts (similar to the alerts for new SMSs) when a new invitation is sent. To turn off these alerts, turn the option 'New Invitation Alerts' to 'OFF'.
