MatLab for Staff and Students

MATLAB Campus TAH License

Oxford University now has a Campus Total Academic Headcount (TAH) license for MATLAB, Simulink, and many other toolboxes. The license covers on-campus and home software use for all instructors, staff, and researchers, as well as classroom and lab installations. Students are also covered by a separate license and can install software on their home or laptop computer.

If while using MATLAB, you get a message to deactivate MATLAB, please ignore it for the time being. MATLAB will not stop working, the messages will go away when everybody has switched to the new licences.

Student TAH License

The Student TAH License is for student owned computers only. It cannot be used by a member of staff and must not be installed on any University owned computer.

We have had a student TAH license for some years. Students need to register and download the installation instructions from

With the new contract, the number of toolboxes available to the students has increase from 16 to 50. The students now have access to the same toolboxes as University staff.

Campus TAH License

The Campus TAH License is for any University owned computers. It can be used for research and teaching, by staff, researchers and research students. Staff, researchers and research students can also use this license to install MATLAB on their personal home computer or laptop.

Designated Computer Activation

We recommend that you still continue to use the Concurrent License Server where ever possible because :-

  • Toolbox usage is logged on the server. If everybody uses a Designated Computer License, we will have no idea what toolboxes are being used.

  • Automatic License Updates. If all the computers in your Department use a Designated Computer license, then next year you will have to go to every computer and update the license. The TAH licenses are yearly licenses.

There is nothing to stop you using a Designated Computer Activation on a Desktop Computer connected to the University Network, if that is what you wish.

Concurrent License Activation

You need a connection to the University Network to use the Concurrent License as the license is obtained from a University License Server.

All users of the old concurrent license have been automatically switch to the new Campus TAH Concurrent License on August 12th

Installation Keys have be sent to the Departmental and College MATLAB representative.

Designated Computer Activation

To use the software, users need to register and download the installation instructions from

This is the same location as used by the students. However, students will only see the Student License and staff will only see the Campus License
