On Thursday 8th September we will be upgrading the TSM server software on two of the TSM servers that provide the HFS service. These servers are:
OX_LIBRARY - manages the tape library
OX_HFS - provides the archive service
The impact is that there will be no access to the archive service, and no access to any data on tape (which in general means no restores) while the upgrades take place. This is expected to be for about 30 minutes sometime between 08:00 and 12:00. The precise timing will depend on the completion of tasks copying overnight client backups to tape. The real-time information of service availability will be displayed at https://status.ox.ac.uk.
Downtime for upgrade of the other servers will be announced in due course.
This new talk is intended for those who already have some experience of the HFS and/or TSM and who manage backups for a number of users or servers.
Topics covered include: checking your unit's backups; configuring TSM to set what data is backed up; and trouble-shooting various TSM-related problems such as restore problems, locked accounts and missed/failed backup schedules.
ITSS may sign up at http://www.it.ox.ac.uk/events/advanced-use-tsm-backup; interested non-ITSS should contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
A basic course on how to get started with the HFS and TSM is also available at http://courses.it.ox.ac.uk/detail/TEFK.
On the morning of Wednesday 26th August we will be upgrading the TSM server software on the servers that provide the HFS Archive and Desktop Backup services (OX_HFS, OX_HFS_B1, OX_HFS_B3, OX_HFS_B5, OX_HFS_B7, and OX_HFS_VPN). We expect each server to be unavailable for approximately half an hour during which no client access will be possible. We hope to have the work completed by late morning.
Updates will be available on the status pages at https://status.ox.ac.uk.
The version 7 client requires Java 7 and 64-bit Linux. The 184.108.40.206 package will be installed on older 64-bit Linux versions/distributions that do not come with Java 7 available. The latest version for 32-bit systems remains 220.127.116.11 but please note that this is now out of support. You can continue to use it but we cannot obtain support from IBM should you have problems backing up.
The 18.104.22.168 client includes a fix that can improve restore performance when restoring files from multiple directories so we strongly recommend you update your client if you are running an earlier version (this fix is already in the current 22.214.171.124 client but upgrade is still encouraged).
There is also an update to the ox-hfs-repo package for RPM based systems only with some small changes to improve the handling of signing keys.
Desktop/Laptop backup: 150 -> 200GB / day
Servers: 300 -> 400GB / day
Large servers: 400 -> 500GB / day
The archive upload limit remains at 250GB per day.
