Our IT Learning Centre includes over 200 classroom-based and over 1000 online courses to help you in your studies, research, administration and future career. We also train staff on specialist University systems and software. The programme is open to all staff, academics and students at the University.
The Centre's online course booking system lists all classroom-based courses and a selection of the online courses we deliver through Molly. Our lunchtime sessions, online resources and some courses are free; there is a charge for other courses.
Types of course
Our classroom-based scheduled courses include common office tools, programming, multimedia, Nexus, WebLearn and more. Our most popular courses include:
- spreadsheet and database design courses
- courses on using reference management tools
- graphic design sessions covering the use of InDesign and Photoshop and their free and open-source equivalents
We offer a range of ways to learn core Microsoft Office skills.
Scheduled courses are normally three-hour modules, morning or afternoon.
Self-paced online courses
All University members have free access to LinkedIn Learning through Molly, a huge library of online learning resources. We also offer self-service learning resources through the IT Learning Portfolio of online course material.
Our short lunch-time sessions cover closely focused topics or new technologies. Examples include our make:, do: and engage: series of talks that showcase the use of IT around the University. Byte-size courses last for one hour, from 12:30pm, and are usually free.
External expert courses
These are taught by experts with leading roles in their respective industries. They are in-depth and last from one to five days. We always negotiate great educational rates with the tutors. Recent examples include courses on writing for the web, Google analytics, and an in-depth introduction to creating video.
Basics of computing
Do you know someone who is new to computing and needs guidance on how to use keyboard, mouse, email and the web? We can help them in our Beginners IT sessions. These are organised on demand so contact us if you are interested.
Closed, bespoke and specialised courses
Our courses are open to all in the University, but if you have a group of people we can run them as a closed course at a mutually convenient time. We charge a flat fee for these courses. We can customise closed courses, so that they are even more relevant to you.
And if there's a topic that we can't cover in the IT Learning Centre then we can still help you. We're experienced at negotiating with external trainers and training suppliers and can arrange to run a specialised course here in our teaching rooms at very favourable rates. You can also book our state-of-the-art IT teaching rooms to run your own courses.
