How to connect buildings to Oxford networks

Caveat

The description given here is very general in order to provide an overview. Please refer to the Service Level Agreement for more details and discuss with the Networks team in IT Services before making any commitments

All main college sites and virtually all university buildings are linked by optical fibre cable to the University Network. Some outlying buildings, such as BSF Swindon, Tubney and Wytham Field Stations rely on either a microwave link or a 3rd party IP connection.

This connection would terminate on a FroDo, assuming you were connecting directly to the University backbone (Odin) as most units do.

If you wish to investigate the options available to install a data network connection to a particular property please contact Network Operations at networks@it.ox.ac.uk.

The duct and optical fibre cable network extends to all colleges and virtually all university buildings.  It also extends to the Begbroke Science Park, John Radcliffe, Old Road, Nuffield Orthopaedic and Warneford hospital sites.

In other areas units have funded the installation of ducts and optical fibre cable.  These projects usually require IT Services Network Operations team to initiate the duct installation and arrange the Local Authority Permissions if ducting on the public highway is required.  The installation of optical fibre cabling will also involve IT Services Network Operations team to specify how it needs to be connected into the existing network.

The University has published the following standards for ductwork and cabling installations:

Our Odin network service provides connection to the University network backbone, interconnections between department / college networks and connection to the internet via Janet. This can also include connection of accommodation and data centre annexe networks using Layer 2 adjacency.

Connection speeds of 2Gbps, 10Gbps and 40Gbps are available.

Option 1: The baseline service, operating at 2Gbps, takes a single connection from your internal network to an active device ("FroDo") that, almost always, has two links to two core routers. Option 1 can also be provided at 10Gbps or 40Gbps, at extra cost.

Option 2: The enhanced resilience service, operating at 2/10/40Gbps, enables you to make two connections from your network to two core routers via two separate FroDos.

Further flexibility and resilience are available via our Ettin service which offers dynamic routing of IPv4 prefixes via more than one FroDo in an active/standby configuration.

To discuss new provision or upgrades, or to investigate the options available, please contact Network Services at networks@it.ox.ac.uk in the first instance.
