What is Skype for Business?

Skype for Business is an online communications tool that offers instant messaging, audio and video conferencing, online meetings and webinars.

Why use Skype for Business?

Skype for Business can be a useful tool for various scenarios within the University:

  • conducting interviews
  • carrying out a large scale research collaboration
  • taking a poll
  • delivering a lecture
  • delivering one-to-one tutorials
  • conducting a student viva voce examination

When not to use Skype for Business

Skype for Business is not a replacement for the University’s Chorus telephone service – you should continue to use Chorus to call mobile phones and landlines or to make chargeable calls.

All of the Skype for Business functionality is also available in Teams. Skype for Business will eventually be deprecated by Microsoft, so it is worth starting to familiarise yourself with Teams now.
