RSS and Apple Podcasts Feeds

Anonymous access

RSS and Apple Podcasts feeds can be accessed by anyone with the feed URL, without needing to authenticate. This means that, if feeds are enabled for a folder, these secret URLs could potentially be shared outside of the institution, allowing anonymous viewers the ability to download the MP4 files.

Downloading MP4 outputs manually for each individual Panopto session can be time-consuming for viewers, particularly if there are many sessions in a folder. Panopto provides viewers with a quick and easy way to download MP4 outputs for all sessions in a folder by allowing them to subscribe to feeds. In addition, the MP4 output from each new session in a folder will automatically be downloaded to the viewer's device as it becomes available, without requiring the viewer to revisit the Panopto folder.

Feeds (termed "podcast feeds") are disabled by default, but can be enabled per-folder via the folder settings (Fig. 1).

Disabling MP4 outputs

Be aware that even if MP4 downloads are disabled in the Panopto folder or session settings (i.e. the "Download enabled" option, as shown in Fig. 1, is set to "No-one"), if podcast feeds are enabled for the folder, viewers will still be able to subscribe to feeds to access the MP4 outputs. To ensure Downloads are disabled entirely for a folder, the feed must also be disabled.

Further information on MP4 outputs can be found here.

Once this option has been enabled for the folder, a grey Feed icon will appear in the upper right of the folder view (Fig. 2). Viewers can click on this icon to subscribe to either RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds or Apple podcasts feeds, for both MP4 (audio-only) and MP4 (video and audio) files.

A comparison list of RSS feed aggregators can be found here. The Apple Podcasts app is available for Windows, macOS and iOS devices. To subscribe to a feed in Apple Podcasts on Windows or macOS:

  1. In the Panopto portal, right-click on the desired feed and copy the URL to your clipboard
  2. Launch the Apple Podcasts app and click File > Add a Show by URL (Apple Podcasts uses the term "show" for a series of recordings)
  3. Paste the URL into Apple Podcasts and click subscribe
  4. Click Shows in the left-hand sidebar. Each Show corresponds to a Panopto folder.

To subscribe to a feed in Apple Podcasts on iOS:

  1. In the Panopto portal, right-click on the desired feed and copy the URL to your clipboard
  2. Launch the Apple Podcasts app and click Library > Edit > Add a Show by URL
  3. Paste the URL into Apple Podcasts and click subscribe
  4. Click Done, then click Shows. Each Show corresponds to a Panopto folder.

Once you have subscribed to a feed in your feed aggregator or Apple Podcasts, MP4 versions of new Panopto sessions will be automatically delivered to your device as they are made available.
