How to login to managed staff PCs

Managed staff PCs are accessed using a CONNECT account. Your CONNECT account will normally have the same username as your SSO account (for example: abcd1234) but should always have a different password. Once logged in to your PC, you will automatically have access to network drives and printers that we manage.

Before you start, make sure that you have your University Card and an IT support call reference number for your new CONNECT account details. If you are connecting remotely or over WiFi then you will also need to set up or know your remote access login details.

  1. Turn on your PC
  2. If you are connecting remotely or over WiFi then you will need to connect to the Oxford VPN using Start Before Login VPN (SBL)
  3. Contact the service desk to request your CONNECT account details. You will need to provide the IT support call reference number from your line manager (or other person who requested an account for you)
  4. Enter your CONNECT username and initial password into the Windows login, then select the arrow   or press Enter. Just this first time, enter your username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234
  5. Register with CONNECT password manager (see the CONNECT password manager guide for full details)
  1. Turn on your PC
  2. You don’t need a network connection or SBL VPN after your first login. However, we recommend that you continue to use these to get the best experience, including access to your network drives and other resources
  3. Enter your CONNECT username and password, then select the arrow   or press Enter

If you are logging in for the first time on a new PC, or if your PC has been reset for maintenance, then you will need to follow these instructions to login.

  1. Turn on your PC
  2. If you are connecting remotely or over WiFi then you will need to connect to the Oxford VPN using Start Before Login VPN (SBL)
  3. Enter your CONNECT username and password, then select the arrow   or press Enter. Just this time, enter your username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234

If you enter the wrong password for your account 3 times in a row then your account will be locked automatically. At the next login you will be warned that the account is locked.

  1. Double-check the username, and make sure that the Windows login screen says “Domain: CONNECT” underneath the password field. If either of these details are incorrect then enter your username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234 and type your password carefully
  2. If the details in step 1 were correct then you can wait 30 minutes, at which time your account will be unlocked automatically
  3. If you need access urgently then call the service desk and we will talk you through a reset procedure. If you are connecting remotely or over WiFi then you will need to activate SBL VPN – if your PC does not have the twin-screen icon Windows prelogon SBL icon on the login screen then we can only assist when you are next connected to an onsite Oxford network

You can reset a forgotten password using the CONNECT password manager. If you are connecting remotely or over WiFi then you will need to activate SBL VPN on your PC. If SBL VPN is not available on your PC then you can reset your password from another computer that you can access without your CONNECT account such as a personal computer connected to Oxford VPN.
