How to connect to eduroam WiFi

eduroam is our recommended wireless service for students and staff, and gives you internet access at Oxford and when you're visiting other participating universities

Windows

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G, Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL) or a home WiFi connection
  3. Download and open/run the eduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. Select the wireless network icon  in the bottom right corner of the screen and select eduroam.  Click Connect
  2. Enter your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password
  3. At the Continue connecting? prompt, select Show certificate details
  4. If the server thumbprint (SHA1) is “FF:5D:7F:D9:94:42:B2:0C:4B:83:24:D6:01:E8:90:F9:85:EA:1F:B3" then select Connect, otherwise do not connect and contact the Service Desk to check for any rogue networks

If you are setting up eduroam elsewhere:

  1. Select the Windows Start menu    > Settings   > Network & Internet   
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network > Manually connect to a wireless network
  3. Provide the following details:
    Network name

    eduroam
    Security type WPA2-Enterprise
    Start this connection automatically Yes
  4. Select Change connection settings
  5. Select the Security tab > Settings > Configure...
  6. Ensure Automatically use my Windows log-on name and password (and domain if any) is not ticked
  7. Confirm all settings then select Close
macOS

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G, Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL) or a home WiFi connection
  3. Use the Safari web browser to download and open/run the eduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. Select the wireless network icon  from the menu bar and select eduroam
  2. Select Mode: Automatic
  3. Provide your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and remote access password
  4. Select Join
  5. You will be asked to trust the radius.oucs.ox.ac.uk certificate (Entrust), select "Accept" or "Trust"
iOS

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G, Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL) or a home WiFi connection
  3. Use the Safari web browser to download and open/run the eduroam installer
  4. After the Profile Downloaded notification, open your Settings  app, select Profile Downloaded1 and install the eduroam profile
  5. Enter your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. Select eduroam from the list of available wireless networks
  2. Enter your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and use your remote access password
  3. If asked to trust the radius.oucs.ox.ac.uk certificate (Entrust), select "Accept" or "Trust"
  4. Select Connect
Android

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

Notice: Remove any existing eduroam configuration

If you have used eduroam on your device before, remove any existing eduroam configuration and the eduroam CAT app if it is installed.

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Install and run the geteduroam app by SURF B.V. from the Google Play Store
  3. Search for University of Oxford, then Next
  4. Enter your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password when prompted
  5. Select CONNECT TO NETWORK

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

Most Android devices can be set up to connect to eduroam in the following way:

  1. Select eduroam from the list of available wireless networks
  2. When prompted provide:
    EAP method PEAP
    Phase 2 Authentication MSCHAPV2
    CA Certificate Use system certificates
     Domain OX.AC.UK
    Identity Your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK
    Anonymous Identity Leave this blank (use anonymous@ox.ac.uk if you encounter issues)
     Password Your remote access password
  3. Select Connect
  4. Your phone should connect to eduroam when it is available. If eduroam is in the available networks list but does not connect automatically then select eduroam, then Connect
ChromeOS

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G, Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL) or a home WiFi connection
  3. Download and open/run the eduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. In the Settings app select Network > Add connection > Add WiFi...
  2. When prompted provide:
    SSID eduroam
    Security EAP
    EAP method PEAP
    EAP Phase 2 authentication MSCHAPv2
    Server CA certificate Default
    Identity Your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK
    Password Your remote access password
    Anonymous Identity anonymous@ox.ac.uk

     

  3. Click Connect

Linux

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G, Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL) or a home WiFi connection
  3. Download and open/run the eduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK and your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

Most Linux devices, including Ubuntu and Fedora, can be set up to connect to eduroam in the following way:

  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Select eduroam from the list of available WiFi networks
  3. When prompted provide:
    WiFi Security WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
    Authentication Protected EAP (PEAP)
    Anonymous Identity Leave this blank
    Domain OX.AC.UK
    CA Certificate 'none' or 'no certificate required'
    PEAP Version 'Version 0' or 'Automatic'
    Inner Authentication MSCHAPv2
    Username Your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK
    Password Your remote access password

     

  4. If you receive a notification labelled No Certificate Authority certificate chosen select Ignore

Generic
  1. Ensure that you have set a remote access password and know what it is
  2. Select eduroam from your device's list of available WiFi networks
  3. Depending on device and operating system, select the appropriate option if prompted:
    SSID  eduroam
    Username  Your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK
    Password  Your remote access password
    Authentication realm OX.AC.UK
    Domain OX.AC.UK
    Anonymous Identity anonymous@ox.ac.uk
    Outer Identity anonymous@ox.ac.uk
    Roaming Identity anonymous@ox.ac.uk
    Wireless type WPA2-Enterprise
    EAP type PEAP
    Sub authentication type EAP-MSCHAP v2
