Overview: Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot integrates AI capabilities into Office 365 apps on the desktop and online, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Loop and Forms.

How to get Microsoft 365 Copilot

In order to use Microsoft 365 Copilot you need to have a Nexus365 account, and have a named-user Copilot licence allocated to you. Staff (collegiate or departmental) are welcome to purchase a discounted licence through the AI and Machine Learning Competency Centre at Buying Generative AI Licences.

To check if you have the Copilot licence, log in to Groups I am in and search for Licensing AD Group: Copilot for M365.

Copilot Teams channel and community

Staff who have a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence will have access to a dedicated group in MS Teams.

Copilot availability

Microsoft 365 Copilot will show up in various places once your licence allocation is active:

  • Teams, on the desktop and online
  • Nexus 365 online apps (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Loop, Forms)
  • Office 365 desktop apps (not available on managed staff PCs, please use the online versions instead)
  • Copilot web assistant

(Note that to use Copilot in Teams meetings you will need to request the ability to record in Teams for your account, and then enable transcription in the meeting).

Other Copilot versions

Microsoft markets several AI-powered assistants and platforms under the Copilot name.

In addition to the Microsoft 365 Copilot, staff and students with a Nexus365 account can also access Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat Enterprise). Make sure you access this by visiting https://portal.office.com/ and choosing the Copilot app: you will see a green shield in the top-right to show that you are using the enterprise version with additional security and privacy features.
