How to manually set up access to CONNECT network drives

Remote Desktop service

If your normal mapped drives do not show in the Remote Desktop service then please contact the Service Desk.

 

 

CONNECT network drives hold files for shared departmental folders, staff managed PC users, and the Research File Service (RFS). 

The network drives show automatically on staff managed PCs (with VPN if working remotely), but can be added manually for other devices or the RFS:

 

Windows
  1. If working remotely or on WiFi, connect to the University VPN
  2. Right click on the Windows Start menu, then select File Explorer
  3. Right click on This PC, then select Map network drive...
  4. Tick the Reconnect at sign-in and Connect using different credentials boxes
  5. Provide a Drive letter and a Folder in the format \\connect.ox.ac.uk\PATH (replacing PATH with a path from the table below), then Finish
  6. Provide your CONNECT username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234 and your CONNECT password
macOS
  1. If working remotely or on WiFi, connect to the University VPN
  2. Open the Finder app, then select Go > Connect to server
  3. Provide the Server Address in the format smb://connect.ox.ac.uk/PATH (replacing PATH with a path from the table below)
  4. Click Add + to add this network location to your favourites
  5. Select your required network location, then Connect
  6. Provide your CONNECT username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234 and your CONNECT password
Linux

Instructions may vary between Linux distributions

The following guide is for Ubuntu Desktop.

 
  1. If working remotely or on WiFi, connect to the University VPN
  2. Select Files in the sidebar to open the file browser
  3. Select Other locations, or an equivalent option to connect to network storage
  4. Provide the Server Address in the format smb://connect.ox.ac.uk/PATH (replacing PATH with a path from the table below)
  5. Provide your CONNECT username and password, with the Domain as connect.ox.ac.uk. If you cannot specify a domain, provide your username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234

Other drive letters can be used, but those listed provide consistency with other users and increase reliablility when sharing documents.
