How to connect to the Remote Desktop Service (CONNECT)

Set up the Remote Desktop Service on Windows, Mac, iOS (iPhone/iPad) or Android devices

When using your own device please consult the guidance on how to protect your computer.

 

The CONNECT remote desktop service can be accessed once your CONNECT Remote Desktop Access service request has been submitted and approved.

Windows

Initial setup

  1. Connect to the University VPN (if required, first Set up the University VPN)
  2. In a web browser, access the Remote Desktop Gateway
  3. Provide your CONNECT username and password
  4. Click on the CONNECT Remote Desktop icon
  5. A Remote Desktop Connection file will download, which can then be moved to your desktop

Connect (each time)

  1. Connect to the University VPN
  2. Double click on the Remote Desktop Connection file
  3. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password
  • Remote desktop services with slightly different configurations may use a different icon
  • If prompted by a Windows security window, provide your username in the format CONNECT\abcd1234 and CONNECT password
macOS

Initial setup

  1. Connect to the University VPN (if required, first set up the University VPN)
  2. Install Microsoft's Windows App from the App Store
  3. Open the Windows App application
  4. Select + > Add Workspace
  5. Provide the Workspace URL https://remotedesktop.connect.ox.ac.uk/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx
  6. Select Next
  7. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password

Connect (each time)

  1. Connect to the University VPN
  2. Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop application and choose Workspaces > Remote Desktop Service
  3. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password
  • Applies to macOS 13.0 onwards
  • To access local files, printers and clipboard, you may need to right-click the CONNECT Remote Service icon, then Edit to enable this
iOS

Initial setup

  1. Connect to the University VPN (if required, first set up the University VPN)
  2. Install Microsoft's Windows App Mobile from the App Store
  3. Open the Windows App Mobile application
  4. Select + > Workspace
  5. Provide the Workspace URL https://remotedesktop.connect.ox.ac.uk/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx
  6. Select Next
  7. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password

Connect (each time)

  1. Connect to the University VPN
  2. Select the CONNECT Remote Desktop Service icon
  3. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password
Android

Initial setup

  1. Connect to the University VPN (if required, first set up the University VPN)
  2. Install Microsoft's Windows App from the Google Play store
  3. Open the Windows App application
  4. Select Workspace (if required, first select +)
  5. Provide the Workspace URL https://remotedesktop.connect.ox.ac.uk/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx
  6. Select Next
  7. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password

Connect (each time)

  1. Connect to the University VPN
  2. Open the Windows App and select CONNECT Remote Desktop
  3. Provide your username in the format abcd1234 and your CONNECT password
