Using the online editor

This guide is aimed at anyone wanting to edit their lectures. For example, you might want to trim the beginning and ending, or edit out sections of your recordings

There are three basic editing guides on this page; one on removing the start, one for trimming off the end, and one for removing specific parts of a recording. There is also a guide on undoing any edits and restoring the original recording.

 

Each of these is accomplished using the Panopto online editor, which can be accessed by hovering your cursor over the thumbnail or title of the session to be edited, and then clicking the grey 'Edit' button that appears (see below reference image):

NB. Edits can be undone and editing in Panopto is non-destructive - it greys out the content and hides it from the viewer during playback, rather than removing parts of the recording.

Guide: Editing out the beginning of a recording

Once the online editor has loaded, follow the below steps to trim off the beginning of your recording:

  1. Place your cursor at the point in the timeline that you want the recording to start
  2. Click and hold on the waveform and drag left/backwards to the very start of the timeline and release
  3. Click 'Apply' followed by 'OK'
  4. The session will process (longer recordings will take longer to process)

Guide: Editing out the ending of a recording

Once the online editor has loaded, follow the below steps to trim off the end of a recording:

  1. Place your cursor at the point in the timeline that you want playback of your recording to stop
  2. Click and hold on the waveform and drag right/towards the very end of the timeline and release
  3. Click 'Apply' followed by 'OK'
  4. The session will process (longer recordings will take longer to process)

Guide: Editing out sections of a recording

Once the online editor has loaded, follow the below steps to remove sections of your recording from playback:

  1. Place your cursor at the point in the timeline where the section to be removed begins
  2. Click and hold on the waveform at the start of the section to be removed, and drag across the waveform until you reach the end of the section to be removed, and release
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for any subsequent sections to be removed from playback
  4. Click 'Apply' followed by 'OK'
  5. The session will process (longer recordings will take longer to process)

Guide: Undoing an edit

Want to undo an edit? 

You can immediately undo any edits by simply clicking the undo icon above the video window:

Alternatively, you can reverse the edit by clicking at either end of the greyed out section and dragging the edit back on itself (see reference video below):
