What is an electronic lab notebook?
Most researchers who work in labs will be used to keeping a lab notebook as a formal record of their work. Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) offer a digital alternative to the traditional paper version.
ELNs offer a number of potential benefits:
- Research records are easily searchable
- Research records can be accessed from any computer or device with internet access
- Research data can be stored alongside experimental records, and linked to it
- Details of who created the record and what edits have been made are captured automatically
ELN provision at Oxford
Since May 2018, the University of Oxford has had a contract with LabArchives for the provision of ELNs to all Oxford researchers, including graduate students. LabArchives is a secure and flexible web-based system.
