Troubleshooting the Windows 11 upgrade

Expand All

The upgrade is being rolled out in tranches so it may not be available yet. However, if you have received an email advising that you can now upgrade but cannot see Windows 11 in the Software Center:

  1. Reboot your device, ensuring any outstanding updates are completed
  2. Select the Windows Start menu, then type software
  3. Select the Software Center app
  4. Select  Options from the left menu
  5. Select Computer Maintenance > Sync Policy button

If the upgrade remains unavailable, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Your upgrade may not occur at the same time as others in your team if:

  • Your device is not compatible with Windows 11, you will be contacted separately to arrange the replacement of your device
  • You have offline files on your home (H:\) drive, you will be contacted about synchronising your files
  • Your upgrade has not yet been scheduled, you will be contacted in due course

These files can be restored from the backup snapshot. Please contact the IT Service Desk as soon as possible.

Reboot your device. If the drive does not reappear, please contact the IT Service Desk.

The hibernate option is no longer available when turning off your computer. The sleep option can be used instead and now drains the battery slower than previously.

Updated laptops may display a padlock on personal files, indicating that they have additional encryption. You can still access these files as normal, but if anyone else logs in to your device this additional security will prevent them from being viewed.

The encryption could remain on the file if it is moved or shared via email. To remove this:

  1. Right click on the file
  2. Select Properties > Advanced button
  3. Untick Encrypt contents to secure data

If you had Microsoft Visio or Project 2016 or 2019 these will have been removed as part of the Windows/Office upgrade process. Existing license holders will need to install Visio or Project 2021.

  1. Select the Windows Start menu, then type oxford
  2. Select the Oxford Applications Installer app
  3. Select Visio or Project 2021

You may need to wait around 30 minutes after completion of your upgrade before Visio or Project appears in the Oxford Applications Installer. If you cannot see them after this, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Outlook (New) has been removed from the Windows 11 upgrade on managed staff PCs, but an automatic Windows upgrade may add it in the future. If this is visible to you, please do not use it. The standard version of Outlook is installed and can be located by selecting the Windows Start menu and typing outlook.

The updated right click context menu in the Windows 11 File Explorer displays less options than in Windows 10. The menu provides a Show more options option to display the previous menu, but if required this can be set as default.

  1. Select the Windows Start menu
  2. Type cmd
  3. Select Command Prompt
  4. In the Command Prompt window, run the following command:
    reg add HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32 /ve /d "" /f
  5. Restart Windows

Application shortcuts can no longer be dragged from the Windows 11 start menu to the desktop, but can still be added in the following way.

  1. In the Windows Start menu, locate the required application shortcut
  2. Right click on the shortcut and select Open file location
  3. Copy the shortcut file, then Paste it to the desktop

Notepad now opens files as tabs rather than as separate windows, but can be reverted if required.

  1. In Notepad, select the cog icon
  2. Update the Opening files setting to Open in a new window
