How to set up Gigaset devices

Notice: Telephony replacement project

In response to BT switching off analogue lines in late 2025, the Telephony Replacement Project is currently coordinating the replacement of centrally managed analogue and critical phone lines.  In future (likely later in 2025) the project will also be reviewing the Chorus VOIP (digital line) service. For more information see the Telephony replacement project webpage.

Gigasets are DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) phones, so there are both handsets and a separate base where the lines are configured (a white box labelled N510).

The handsets are then associated with the correct base by pairing them to the base.

To configure the base initially, this is sent to the Chorus team to set up, please see our information for new Gigasets.

Handsets can be paired at set up if sent with the base, alternately they can be paired later on-site.

Expand All

The extensions should already be set on the base, from the initial setup (as above).

To pair the handsets :

  1. Go to the handset settings (cog button bottom right), then select Registration - don't press Register Handset yet
  2. Hold down the central blue button on the base for a few seconds and now press Register Handset on the handset
  3. The handset will display Searching for base in Registration mode
  4. The handset will then prompt Please enter system PIN - let go of the middle button on the base at this point, and enter 0000

The handset should now be paired.  To check that the pairing is successful, quickly tap the middle button of the base - this will page associated paired handsets with a valid chorus IP address 10.xx.xx.xx.  If it doesn't then please try to re-pair the device.  For further help, please see the troubleshooting section below.

(The IP address can also be found at Settings > System > Local network)

If there are multiple extensions on the base, once all handsets have been paired, the chorus team can set the inbound/outbound association to each extension remotely, or this can be done via the handset

To do this the handsets will have an identifying label on the front e.g. INT1, INT2

Outbound (Send)

  1. Go to the handset settings (cog button bottom right)
  2. Select Telephony and press OK
  3. Select Send Connections and press OK
  4. Select the relevant handset e.g. INT1 if the handset is INT1, and press OK
  5. Do this for each handset.

Inbound (Receive)

  1. Go to the handset settings (cog button bottom right)
  2. Select Telephony and press OK
  3. Select Rec. Connections and press OK
  4. Select the relevant handset e.g. INT1 if the handset is INT1, and press OK.  Set the toggle to Yes. An additional step here is that you need to go into each other INT and set to toggle to No for them
  5. Do this for each handset, e.g. if INT3  - toggle that to Yes, and INT1, INT2 to No (Note: if there is only one extension and multiple paired handsets this does not need doing, only if there are multiple extensions).

If there are existing numbers on the base and they need to be changed, please see our details on how to reprogram a Gigaset device

Checking that the base has a valid IP after the handsets are paired

Quickly tap the middle button of the base - this will page associated paired handsets with a valid chorus IP address 10.xx.xx.xx, if not try and re-pair the handset.

If it pages the handset but with IP address 0.0.0.0 then either the port is not patched to chorus, or the VLAN on the white base is incorrect.

Please check the base in a known working port.

If the VLAN is incorrect then this will need to be sent back to be re-configured however if it has moved from a site with a different VLAN we can change the VLAN remotely if plugged into the original site temporarily - please raise a ticket for Chorus Support with the extension and VLAN and we can go through the best option.

Charging issues

Please check the handset in a known working charger, if the handset still fails to charge then in most cases the batteries need replacing - please see the section below.

The chorus team does not supply consumables, these need to be sourced locally.

The type required is 2x NIMH 750mAH 1.2V rechargeable.

The devices that are currently in use in at the university are the S650H and R650H (Rugged) handsets

Please see:

Gigaset the user manual for S650H

Gigaset the user manual for R650H

Gigasets voicemail messages are held on the underlying chorus mailbox system (Xpressions), so to listen to messages you need to have a voicemail box on chorus (this can be set in phoneman if required).

If you have messages:

  1. The message envelope will flash - press this then OK
  2. Enter your voicemail password (6-digit PIN) then press # to access the voicemail system.
  3. Select option 3 to listen to any messages.

If you have no messages and want to access the voicemail system dial 300102 from the handset and you will be prompted for your voicemail password (6-digit PIN) then press #, as above.

Here is further information on chorus voicemail

If the gigasets are in a chorus pickup group (a pickup group can be set in phoneman) then to pick up other phones in the pickup group dial **3

When on a call you can transfer a call by pressing the R button on the device.

This will place the call to be transferred on hold.  Enter the number to transfer to, and press the green call key, this will transfer the call.
