Record a meeting in Teams

Teams can be used to capture audio, video, and screen sharing activity for the purpose of delivering teaching and learning inclusive of training courses. The recording happens in the cloud and is saved to the Microsoft Stream service.

Before you can record meetings you must complete the Recording in Teams request form. Requests are actioned at 5pm each day (including weekends) but it may take up to 24 hours for the change to take effect and for recording to become available, but please note that the recording option is only available when you are in a meeting.

  1. Open your Teams application and start or join the meeting
  2. Go to the Chat Menu and click on the three ellipses button icon (…)
  3. From the menu that appears select 'Start Recording'
  4. Everyone in the meeting is now informed by a notification banner that recording has started
  5. The notification is also added to the Chat board
  6. To stop recording, click on the three ellipses button icon (…) and select 'Stop Recording' from the menu
  7. Confirm you wish to stop recording by selecting Stop recording in the popup box
  8. Once stopped the recording is processed and sent to Microsoft Streams service.
  9. You will receive an email from Streams telling you the recording is now ready for viewing and sharing.
  1. In order to view,share, download or delete your recordings visit
  2. Click on My Content in the top menu to open menu options and select Meetings
  3. The Meetings listing will open and your new recording will be shown
  4. You can now add to channels, watch list, update video details, share with others, download or delete the recording.

The default permissions for the recording are set with the person who made the recording as the owner of the video and the Nexus365 users who were on the meeting invite are set as viewers. External or guest meeting participants will not have access to the recording.  

Please note that video owners have the ability to open their video up to all Nexus365 users. In the video permissions section, the owner can allow every Nexus365 user the permission to view their video by selecting "Allow everyone in your company to view this video".

Only select this setting if you are sure you want to allow every Nexus365 user access to view your video.

Note recording is restricted to staff members who have submitted a request to have recording enabled.

The meeting organiser MUST have the ability to record in order for a person from the same organization to be able to start recording.



  • Recording continues even if the person who started the recording has left the meeting
  • The recording stops automatically once everyone leaves the meeting
  • If someone forgets to leave the meeting, the recording automatically ends after four hours

Before initiating a recording you please take note of the University's policy on the recording of video conferences 


Recordings made for teaching purposes should ideally be uploaded into Panopto so all teaching materials are available via Canvas. In all cases the 'Replay' process for Presenter, and if appropriate participant, release remains the same regardless of the technology used to record the session.
